Police arrest NDC executives in Asawase

It is not clear what might have caused the arrest of the National Democratic Congress executives in Asawase, an NDC stronghold in Ashanti

The police in Kumasi have arrested some executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asawase in the Ashanti Region.

Although the cause of arrest is unclear, the police apprehended the executives near the Aboabo office of the local NDC MP, Muntaka Mubarak. Officers fired gunshots before whisking the suspects away.

Dozens of party supporters besieged the Asokore Mampong Police Station to demand the immediate release of their members who have been in custody since Saturday night.

Asaase Radio’s Ashanti regional correspondent, Jonathan Ofori, reports that the executives have now been transferred from the Asokore Mampong Police Station to the regional police command at Kumasi.

Massed up

Reports also suggest the NDC is mobilising its supporters to besiege the central police command to demand the release of the executives.

A statement issued by Yaw Isham Bonsu, the youth organiser of the NDC in the constituency, said: “Dear comrades, I wish to inform all party faithful that some party executives in Asawase have been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for no reason.

“I am, by this medium, calling and encouraging all our party members in the metropolis to mass up at the central police station to protest and demand their immediate release from the police custody.

It is the second time in less than four months that NDC executives have been arrested by police in the Ashanti Region.

In July, three branch executives of the party were arrested by the police after they were caught with registration forms intended for the voter registration exercise organised by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Reports suggest the three men were attempting to register applicants on the sidelines of the exercise at the Mamponghene registration centre at Akwatialine, a suburb of Kumasi.
