At least 22 suspects have been picked up by the police for rioting within the Accra metropolis during Monday’s nationwide sit-down strike by commercial drivers.
The suspects will be arraigned in court today (7 December 2021) for various offences such as rioting, causing damage and blocking public road.
“The suspects took advantage of the sit-down strike to disturb public peace notably at Anyaa, Sowutuom and Amasaman. All 22 suspects will be put before the court,” the police said in a statement.
Suspension of strike
Meanwhile, the commercial transport drivers in Ghana have suspended the sit-down strike which left thousands of commuters stranded at bus stations.
They parked their vehicles to compel the government to scrap some taxes on fuel to help reduce costs at the pumps.
A statement issued and signed by Godfred Abulbire, the general secretary of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), said “the intended strike action which was scheduled to take effect today Monday (6 December) has been suspended.”
“We, therefore, entreat our cherished members to go back to their normal duties,” the statement added as the drivers held talks with the Office of the President.
