Aqua edition of Rhythms on da Runway launched

This is the 11th edition and is themed "The Aqua Edition," which seeks to put the spotlight on Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG-6) - Clean Water and Sanitation

The launch of Ghana’s premier fashion and music event, Rhythms on da Runway took place in a vibrant ceremony at Accra’s Soho Bar on Wednesday 20 September 2023, graced by esteemed figures from government, industry, arts & culture, and the international community.

Kofi Okyere-Darko popularly known as K.O.D., creative president of Nineteen57 Events, stated that, “As we delve into ‘The Aqua Edition,’ we are reminded of the profound impact our actions have on our planet and future generations.”

“Safeguarding these invaluable biodiversity havens is our sacred duty, not just for our children but for the entire world to inherit their beauty and life. Through this event, we aim to champion conscious consumerism, visionary design, and thoughtful decision-making that prioritises environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”

Yvonne Ocloo, the producer and director of Rhythms on da Runway, emphasized that this year’s edition is set to be a vibrant celebration of Africa’s diverse cultural heritage which is aimed at seeking to unite communities and recognise the committed individuals and organizations tirelessly working to promote Africa globally.

She also underscored the event’s social responsibility aspect, shedding light on two critical concerns: the illegal mining crisis in Ghana’s Atewa Forest and the environmental repercussions of discarding second-hand clothing into our oceans.

“This unique approach seeks to initiate dialogues, inspire action, and raise awareness about sustainable practices within the fashion industry,” she explained.

The main event, scheduled for December 2nd, 2023, will honour iconic musical personalities, including three-time Grammy nominees Rocky Dawuni and Morgan Heritage who are very likely to bless the musical microphones that day.

Complementing this musical extravaganza is a spectacular fashion showcase featuring talented designers inspired by Africa’s vibrant cultures and natural beauty.

South Africa’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Grace Jeanet Mason, commended the organizers for their commitment to diversity and social impact by incorporating the SDGs into the program’s outlook.

She pledged her office’s support for addressing SDG-six, as it aligns with the commission’s main focus.

Notable figures present at the launch included the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies Daniel McKorley, the Chief Executive Officer of Equity Health Insurance Elton Afari, Managing Director of Reiss & Co, Jeff Sowa, the Chief Executive Officer of Wembley Sports Limited, Robert Coleman and many other business executives.

The launch saw amazing musical performances from Abiana as well as Marcia Aitkens who performed a live rendition of her chat topping reggae song “I’m Still In Love With You together with Dancehall artiste Epixode, and Edem.

Annabelle Mckenzie, Director of the ‘Beyond the Return’ Secretariat, expressed her excitement about Nineteen57’s role in promoting fashion and tourism in the country, affirming her office’s commitment to collaborating and supporting the program this year and beyond.

Rhythms On Da Runway remains a must-attend event for those passionate about African fashion, music, and culture.

It serves as a platform for designers and artists to showcase their creativity to the world, celebrating the best and brightest of Africa.
