A swift joint operation by police and military forces in Nkwanta South, a municipality in the Oti Region, has uncovered an alarming arsenal of weapons, including firearms, cartridges, and knives, as part of efforts to quell an ongoing conflict.
The operation, launched on Saturday (18 January), marks a decisive response to the escalating violence that has gripped the area in recent weeks.
At least 16 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest as authorities intensify investigations into illegal arms possession and related crimes.
Security forces have zeroed in on key conflict hotspots, where tensions have boiled over due to what local sources describe as a protracted land dispute among tribal factions.
The clashes turned deadly on Wednesday (15 January) when unidentified assailants opened fire, killing several residents and leaving many others injured.
In the aftermath, homes were set ablaze, forcing families to flee and plunging the community into fear and uncertainty.
For many residents, the joint intervention has been a welcome relief. However, the community’s grief is palpable. Survivors are calling on the government and local stakeholders to ensure justice for the victims.
Authorities have assured the public that the operation will continue until calm is fully restored.
For now, the Nkwanta South municipality remains on edge, with the scars of the conflict serving as a stark reminder of the cost of unresolved disputes.
