Planet Sport Football Africa podcast lands on Asaase Radio

Planet Sport Football Africa brings the drama, debate, and passion of African football to Ghanaian airwaves, starting Friday (17 January)

African football enthusiasts in Ghana are in for a treat as the Planet Sport Football Africa podcast officially makes its debut on Asaase Radio on Friday (17 January).

The weekly 30-minute programme, already a hit across 100 stations in Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia, is set to bring its unique take on African football to Ghanaian airwaves.

The podcast, renowned for its in-depth analysis of African football and the achievements of African players globally, promises to immerse listeners in the highs and lows of the sport.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Friday (17 January), the podcast’s executive producer and host, Steve Vickers, shared his excitement about the Ghanaian launch.

“We’re really excited to be joining you from this evening with a show that’s all about the passion and the excitement of African football,” Vickers said.

“There’s nothing like African football, especially with our national teams, of course, with the highs and the lows and the struggles and the joys when they come sometimes as well.”

Vickers highlighted the show’s mission to delve into the big stories shaping African football while celebrating the success of African players plying their trade across Europe and beyond.

“The thing about African football,” he added. “It’s a language that connects people all across the continent.”

The podcast’s first episode on Asaase Radio will tackle two hot-button issues in African football: the surprise postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the enduring debate about whether local or foreign coaches are better suited for national teams.

“The African Nations Championship that was due to start just in a couple of weeks, but now it’s been put back by six months,” Vickers explained. “So we’re looking at the possible reasons for that.”

The show will also explore the age-old question of whether national teams benefit more from local coaches or foreign expertise.

Special guest Emerse Faé, the head coach of Côte d’Ivoire’s national team and winner of the Africa Cup of Nations with the Elephants, will weigh in.

“He feels that a local coach is much better placed if they’re given the technical training expertise; if they’re paid on time, because they connect with the players that we could even win the World Cup with local coaches,” Vickers revealed.

With its vibrant storytelling, expert insights, and dedication to celebrating the essence of African football, Planet Sport Football Africa is set to become a staple for Ghanaian football fans.
