Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko player Emmanuel Yartey has passed away after battling with a long illness.

Yartey was a member of the Black Starlets squad that played in the Africa U17 Cup of Nations which was staged in Botswana in 1997.

In line with Islamic traditional customs and beliefs, the former CAF Champions League winner player was buried on Wednesday in Accra.

He played for Okwawu United FC before moving to Asante Kotoko SC where he helped the club to win some domestic titles.

He later joined Accra Hearts of Oak SC in 1999 and was an outstanding member of the Hearts of Oak team that won the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup in 2000 and 2001 respectively.

Despite his talents on the field, he struggled with attitude problems and was eventually left to fend for himself.
Yartey’s career was tragically cut short due to a strange mental illness that afflicted him after his playing days.

His condition deteriorated, and he was often spotted wandering the streets of Accra.

Yartey was seen as an exceptional player with immense but unfilled potential.
