People of Akontombra defy rain to endorse Akufo-Addo

The chiefs and people of Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region endorse President Akufo-Addo’s second-term bid

The chiefs and people of Sefwi Akontombra in the Wiawso Municipality of the newly created Western North Region have endorsed and pledged their unwavering support to the second-term bid of President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking for and on behalf of Akontombra and its surrounding townships, Nana Kwabena Ebie II, the Akontombramanhene, said: “President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proved himself an honest and trustworthy leader, and so his reward is not only in heaven, but that all the chiefs and their subjects will unite to reward him and his government with the thumb during the December 2020 polls.”

Defying driving rain, biting cold and intermittent power outages, the people of Akontombra and its catchment towns, including Ackaakrom, Aprutu, Bokaso, Edumefua, Kofikrom, Nsawora and Yawkrom, chanted and sang for well over five hours until President Akufo-Addo mounted the wet platform to take the salute and address the charged gathering on Thursday (24 September).

The visibly elated president, clad in his trademark waxprint shirt, danced to the melody of “Asempa pa bi a mate, oye oye” before addressing the gathering.

The local people, equally elated, shouted continuously in unison: “Four More for Nana, Four More for Tetteh!” referring to Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the sitting MP for Sefwi Akontombra.

Jubilation

Responding to speeches by the chiefs, President Akufo-Addo promised to hold discussions with his ministers about various requests they had made, especially regarding the need for a nurses’ training school in Akontombra.

The crowd of people, most of whom are involved at some level in cocoa production, began jubilating when Honourable Joseph Boahen Aidoo, chief executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) – a local boy – announced the price increase for a bag of cocoa from GHC515.63 to GHC660. They resumed the chorus: “Four More for Nana, Four More for Tetteh!”

The chiefs presented President Akufo-Addo with two fattened white sheep and a beautifully woven kente cloth to show their appreciation of the sincerity of his dealings with the people of Akontombra, and Ghana at large, over the past four years.

The rain continued to pour down but the people of Akontombra stayed put, welcoming their president and giving his run for a second term their seal of approval.
