The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has issued a strong warning to defaulting customers, urging them to pay their electricity bills or face immediate disconnection.
As part of an aggressive revenue mobilisation drive, NEDCo is targeting millions of cedis owed in unpaid bills, especially in the Bono and Ahafo Regions. The company says the debt, which exceeds GHC30 million, is severely impacting its operations.
Speaking during a media interaction, Sunyani Area Manager, Eugene Odoi Addo, described the situation as deeply concerning.
“When customers don’t pay, it affects our ability to maintain equipment, respond swiftly to faults, and invest in improving the power system,” he said.
The warning comes as NEDCo dispatches operational teams to Tepa in the Ashanti Region, under its Mass Revenue Mobilisation Exercise within the Sunyani operational zone.
Tepa defaulters disconnected
The recent operation in Tepa focused on households and private businesses, many of which have defaulted on bill payments for months.
The team’s first stop was Pro Royal, a local facility that had already been disconnected due to an unpaid bill of GHC20,710. From there, the team moved into Tepa Zongo, where several households were found to owe between GHC11,000 and GHC14,000 each.
The exercise ended at Nana Adu Drinking Pub in Tepa-Wioso, which was disconnected after accumulating an outstanding debt of GHC23,270.
NEDCo says it aims to recover at least GHC2 million from Tepa alone, a small portion of the GHC30 million debt owed in the broader Sunyani operational area.
“We can’t continue to provide electricity to customers who won’t pay. We must act decisively to protect our revenue,” said Odoi Addo.
Illegal reconnections worsen losses
Beyond disconnections, illegal reconnections remain a growing concern.
Tepa Area Supervisor, Martin Ganaa, noted that some disconnected customers illegally reconnect themselves to the grid, further compounding losses and risking equipment damage.
“We’ve seen cases where people sneak in and reconnect themselves. It’s not just illegal, it’s dangerous,” he said. “We’re deploying stronger monitoring systems to curb these activities.”
More towns to be targeted
NEDCo says the Tepa operation is only the beginning. The company plans to extend the campaign to other towns in the coming weeks, warning that defaulters who fail to settle their debts will be disconnected without further notice.
The message is simple and firm: “Pay your bills or expect a knock on your door.”
