Parts of Accra flooded after hours of rainfall

A torrential downpour on Sunday afternoon has left parts of Accra submerged, with severe flooding along the Pokuase–Amasaman road, stranding hundreds of commuters in gridlock.

The rain, which began around 3:00 p.m., caused significant water accumulation along the stretch between the Ofankor Barrier and the Mile 7 roundabout, making it impossible for vehicles to move in either direction.

The flooding led to a massive traffic jam stretching from St. John’s Hospital to Ofankor, with some frustrated drivers abandoning their vehicles.

Photos and videos captured rising floodwaters submerging vehicles, while stranded commuters waited for the waters to recede. Other residential areas were not spared.

Accra’s poor drainage infrastructure has been blamed for recurring floods during heavy rains. Local authorities say no casualty has been reported.
