Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee visits Immigration headquarters

The visit was for the committee members to engage officials of the National Immigration Management Committee (NIMC) to familiarise itself with operations of the GIS

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, has commended the management of the Ghana Immigration Service for the successful completion of major infrastructure across some border posts and commands, as part of the implementation of its five-year strategic plan (2018-2022).

Agyapong was speaking when he led a 12-member delegation of the committee to the national headquarters of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Accra.

The visit was for the committee members to engage officials of the National Immigration Management Committee (NIMC) to familiarise itself with operations of the GIS as part of a duty tour to stakeholders under the committee’s responsibility.

Successes

The chairman stated that he was impressed with the level of development, projects and successes that the service has chalked with this current administration, especially with the reconstruction and design of the Immigration Training School at Assin Foso.

Agyapong also reiterated that although the committee has observed that GIS does not have enough budgetary allocation and or an increase in retainment of its internally generated fund (IGF), it was, however, impressed with the level of outputs that the available resources have yielded.

On his part, the ranking member of the committee, James Agalga, called for more collaborations and interactions with the committee and assured the gathering of the support of the committee to push the concerns of the Ghana Immigration Service.

Agalga emphasised that he appreciated the recognition of the volume of work the erstwhile government and parliamentary committee invested in the service which has yielded these evidential results. He therefore congratulated the Comptroller-General of Immigration and the management members of the service and called for more improved ways to achieve more for personnel.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration,  Kwame Asuah-Takyi stressed that the GIS needed the committee’s support during negotiations and approval processes of budgetary allocation presentations in Parliament.

He called for a more robust attention and recognition of the GIS in relations to provision of more accoutrements which would enhance the operations of the GIS.

Asuah-Takyi said: “Addressing security issues is very paramount, the GIS needs to impact more and ensure effective border management, we can do so much with your support.”

Other members of the committee present during the visit included, Ophelia Mensah, James Agalg, Dr Zanetor Rawlings, Cletus Avoka, Kwadwo Asante, Kofi Adams, Peter Lanchene Toobu, Benson Tongo Baba, Mohammed Amin Adam, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei and Christian Otuteye who came as a friend of the committee.
