Akwasi Osei-Adjei to NPP: Prioritise rebuilding party than projecting flagbearers

Osei-Adjei, who is eyeing the national chairman position of the NPP, is optimistic of turning the fortunes of the party around if given the nod in next month's elections

Akwasi Osei-Adjei, a national chairman aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has emphasised the need for the party to focus on rebuilding in order to win the 2024 elections.

Osei-Adjei believes this is crucial if the party really wants to increase its chances of retaining power.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (30 June), he said: “I think we’re putting the cart before the horse. Let’s spend time in building the party and withdraw from this person will be the flagbearer or that person will be the flagbearer.”

“The NPP has always been about inclusivity and allowing people speak; dictatorship is not our way of doing things.
“The chairman of the party should be somebody who’ll be close to the president and also advise the president. So the party chairman is very important in the scheme of things,” he said.

Osei-Adjei is optimistic of turning the fortunes of the party around if given the nod in next month’s elections.

“The government is doing very well but it seems that the party is not responding and I believe I can solve this issue. By experience and knowledge of the party, I must state again that there is a disconnect between the grassroot and the party,” he said.

Projecting Bawumia-Alan ahead of Election 2024 is “rubbish”

The MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has kicked against the projection of the two main flagbearer hopefuls of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen.

The vociferous lawmaker said the development will end up creating a sharp division within the governing party ahead of the 2024 elections.

Speaking at the NPP USA 2022 delegates’ conference over the weekend, the maverick politician called on the party to ensure a level ground for other hopefuls to participate in the presidential race.

“We have a sharp division – Alan- Bawumia – to me it is rubbish. If you are a democrat, why wouldn’t you want somebody to contest.

“You call yourself democrats, if you don’t want anybody to contest, be a dictator and let us know,” he said, adding: “So, if I contest you, I am not your enemy, but when you contest and you don’t win, the person who rather won, doesn’t want to deal with the losers.”

“So, I think we should allow anybody who is a true member of the party, who has interest in contesting to contest, if you want to protect MPs protect their purse, so that they can do constituency work to retain power,” he said.
