The Paramount Chief of the Wungu Traditional Area, Naa Salma Mahamudu Issahaku, has pledged his support to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Mamprusi, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaah, in combating substance abuse in the municipality.
The MCE had earlier appealed to traditional leaders, assembly members, Imams, pastors, and stakeholders to join forces to tackle the growing menace of illicit drug use among youth in the area.
He emphasised the need for opinion leaders and stakeholders to refrain from intervening in criminal cases.
In an interview with Asaase News at his palace in Wungu, Naa Salma Mahamudu Issahaku welcomed the MCE’s initiative, stressing that it should be translated into concrete action rather than mere political rhetoric.
The Paramount Chief urged his subjects to report anyone found selling illicit drugs in the traditional area to his palace, allowing the law to take its course.
He also advised parents to counsel their children to prevent them from falling prey to substance abuse.
“I am calling on my elders to report anyone suspected of selling these illicit drugs, so we can counsel them. If they refuse, we will take necessary action,” the Chief said. “They are destroying the future of our youth.”
Naa Salma Mahamudu Issahaku expressed support for the MCE’s decision, but warned that politicians must be held accountable for their actions. “I support the MCE’s decision, and we will help him fight against drug abuse. However, politicians must be trusted to follow through on their commitments.”
The issue of substance abuse has become a growing concern in the North East Region, with some youth resorting to taking tramadol, energy drinks with hard drugs, and other illicit substances, which is damaging their future.
