Over 3,500 fires recorded in first half of 2022, says GNFS

For the same period in 2021, official records show that 3,030 fires were recorded with a corresponding estimated cost of damage to properties of GHC24 million

A total of 3,678 fires were recorded in the first half of 2022 with an estimated cost of damage to properties at over GHC30 million, the latest figures released by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reveal.

For the same period in 2021, official GNFS records show that 3,030 fires were recorded with a corresponding estimated cost of damage to properties of GHC24 million.

As part of measures to reduce fire outbreaks, especially at the domestic level in the country, the Ghana National Fire Service has appealed to the public to buy Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders from only authorised dealers and avoid using refurbished ones.

A fire service spokesperson Desmond Ackah said: “We have been recording over the period some level of gas explosion fires and that actually prompted us to intensify our surveillance in that area.”

“I believe they themselves do not even know the dangers that they put themselves into, apart from putting the lives of people at risk. And then also selling cylinders which does not meet safety and pressure standards.

“Therefore what we are going to do this time around is to intensify education, so that the punitive measures such as serving jail terms and be made to even pay some monies would be enforced. That is why the police have been [brought] in to help us achieve that. That is going to be deterrent enough for people to stop engaging in criminal and illegal activities,” Ackah said.
