Over 200,000 delegates vote today as five contenders chase NPP flagbearership

More than 200,000 delegates are voting today, Saturday (31 January), as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds its presidential primaries across the country.

Five aspirants are in the race as the opposition party reorganises after suffering a heavy loss during the 2024 general election.

They are: former agric minister Bryan Acheampong, former Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Agyapong and former general secretary Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

The rest are former education minister and Bosomtwe MP,  Yaw Osei Adutwum and former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Security details

The Ghana Police Service has announced a comprehensive security arrangements to safeguard the process.

In a statement, the Police said adequate personnel have been deployed to all designated voting centres, collation points and surrounding areas nationwide to ensure the safety of delegates, party officials, election officials, observers and the general public, as well as the protection of property before, during and after the exercise.

The Service said police visibility patrols — both mobile and static — have been intensified, with rapid response teams positioned to respond swiftly to any security situation that may arise.

Commitment

Access control measures will also be strictly enforced at voting venues to maintain order throughout the process.

The Police have appealed to party supporters and the general public to cooperate fully with security personnel, observe the rules governing the primaries and conduct themselves in a peaceful and lawful manner.

Members of the public have also been encouraged to report any suspicious activity or security concerns to officers on duty, at the nearest police station, or via the emergency numbers 191 or 112.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security throughout the country.
