Otumfuo to resume peace talks on Bawku conflict from 28 April

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced plans to resume mediation efforts in the protracted Bawku conflict, following a renewed commitment from President John Mahama to support the traditional ruler’s peace initiative.
In a statement issued on Monday (15 April), the Manhyia Palace confirmed that mediation talks will be held from 28 April to 1 May 2025, at the Asantehene’s palace in Kumasi.
“His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, will resume mediation of the Bawku crisis as agreed with both parties from 28 April to 1 May 2025, at the Manhyia Palace,” the statement read.
The Palace called on all parties involved in the conflict to fully cooperate with the process, urging stakeholders to prioritise dialogue in pursuit of lasting peace.
“Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku,” the statement added.

The decision to resume talks follows a resurgence of violence in Bawku, including recent clashes that led to the deaths of two police officers and disruptions to healthcare services.
The upcoming mediation is expected to bring together leaders from the rival factions, traditional authorities, and national security representatives in a renewed attempt to resolve the long-standing chieftaincy dispute that has plagued the area for years.
