
Preparations are complete for the 2024 edition of the Otumfuo Reading Community Challenge (OCRCC), which marks the silver jubilee of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The knock-out stage, following the community competitions, will be held on 26 August 2024 after 60 champions were placed on ballots during a brief event held at the Manhyia Palace on Friday (26 July).
Owusu Ababio, Head of Stakeholder Relations for the Otumfuo Foundation emphasized the importance of the competition as a celebration of education, culture, and community. He encouraged students to develop a strong reading habit, which not only boosts knowledge but also builds self-confidence and empowers young minds.
“We have just had the balloting of 2024 OCRC for the community champions and we are looking forward to a fair and competitive contest come August 26, 2024, at the venue yet to be disclosed. We are organising this contest in honour of his royal majesty as we celebrate his 25 years of enstoolment on the Golden Stool and then number two the jubilee edition is taking place in all the 43-district municipal and metro centers of education in Ashanti region”, Ababio disclosed.
“[As a student] you need to inculcate a habit of reading because apart from this contest, reading boosts your knowledge base and then any student who can read the language, who knows language is academically good. With the 60 community champions, I would tell them that continue to prepare themselves and not to be overconfident”, he added.
Launched in 2021 by the Otumfuo Foundation, the competition focuses on improving reading skills in Junior High School students under the leadership of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Regional Director of Education, Thomas Boateng, praised the Asantehene for initiating the reading challenge, which has revitalized the reading spirit among JHS students. He urged stakeholders to continue supporting this important initiative, which fosters a love for reading and lifelong learning.
The knockout stage has four stages including the Round of 60, Round of 40, Quarterfinal and Semifinals.
“In the knockout stage, two champions from each contest will qualify for the next stage while 20 exits the competition. There will be 20 contests in Round of 40 as well. The winner of Contest One will meet the first runner-up of Contest 11 while the first runner-up of Contest One will also face the winner of Contest 11 and it goes on like that,” said Tweneboah Kodua the OCRC coordinator explained.
Five contestants will subsequently qualify for the finals which will take place at the Manhyia Palace.
