Fire razed a four-unit bedroom house to the ground in the Oti Region on Wednesday (2 February), officials have confirmed.
The assemblyman for Nyambong electoral area, Pius Amegbor told Asaase News that due to the bad nature of the road the Ghana National Fire Service in the municipality could not reach the scene on time to douse the fire.
Preliminary investigations reveal the fire was due to an electrical fault.
“The fire service told us that one of the sockets was left on, which caused the fire. Currently, we have informed NADMO [National Disaster Management Organisation] so we are waiting for feedback from them,” Amegbor told Asaase News.
“Fire outbreak has been a major problem in the municipality and it urgently needs to be addressed,” he added.
Cost of damage
According to the owner of the house, Ogaja Kofi the fire completely destroyed the structure and has appealed to the government to support him restart life.
“Everything was destroyed in the fire like fridges, utensils, ceiling fans, and over GHC2,500 is burnt, so we are pleading with the government to come to our aid,” he said.
Eyewitness account
According to an eyewitness, she was processing “gari” in a nearby house when she saw smoke coming out of the house.
“I started shouting for help and drawing people’s attention when I saw the thick smoke, but before we all realised everything inside the house was completely burnt.”
