Organisers call for corporate help as Suhum Kenkey Party expands impact

This year, organisers donated seven wheelchairs to the Suhum Government Hospital and 1,000 exercise books to the Jehovah Rapha School as part of their annual charitable outreach

Organisers of the annual Suhum Easter Kenkey Festival have called on corporate bodies to support the growing event, as this year’s edition recorded increased patronage and meaningful donations to the local community.

Now in its seventh year, the festival has evolved from a small social gathering into a well-known cultural event in the Eastern Region. This year, organisers donated seven wheelchairs to the Suhum Government Hospital and 1,000 exercise books to the Jehovah Rapha School as part of their annual charitable outreach.

“The Easter Kenkey Festival started as a small party being organised by some friends during Easter,” said lead organiser Kwadwo Omari. “By the grace of God, we are where we are today.”

The 2025 edition of the festival featured live band performances and communal servings of kenkey and fish, drawing crowds from Suhum and beyond.

Mr Omari said interest in the festival continues to grow each year, adding that “people want to be part of the success story.” He emphasised the importance of wider support, saying the group hopes to attract corporate sponsorship in the years ahead.

Over the years, the group has made various donations to the community, including a polytank for the Suhum Government Hospital. But their ambitions are growing.

“We want to put up a building to support the people of Suhum,” Mr Omari revealed, noting the group’s long-term goal to mark its 10th anniversary in 2027 with a lasting impact.

Held annually during Easter, the Suhum Easter Kenkey Festival is both a celebration of food and community spirit, and a vehicle for fundraising and development in the town.
