Ghana’s Black Loopers suffer setback in 13th African Games

Cynthia Kwabi made it the furthest, making it to the Round of 16, but Egypt's Hana Gouda was just too much to handle

Ghana’s national table tennis team, the Black Loopers, faced disappointment in the Men’s and Women’s singles events at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana. Despite a promising start, the team failed to advance beyond the Round of 32, with only Cynthia Kwabi progressing to the Round of 16.

On the opening day of the competition, the Black Loopers showcased their prowess, with all but four players making it to the Round of 32.

However, the journey ended there for most, as both Celia Baah-Danso and Bernice Borquaye suffered 3-0 defeats to formidable opponents from Algeria and Cameroon, respectively.

Eva Adom-Amankwaa put up a spirited fight but narrowly missed out on progressing, losing 3-2 to Madagascar’s Karen Hanitra Raharimanana.

The lone survivor for Ghana in the Women’s Singles, Cynthia Kwabi, demonstrated her skill by defeating Angola’s Ruth Tavares 3-1 to reach the Round of 16. However, her journey was halted by the reigning International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African champion, Hana Gouda, who secured a convincing 3-0 victory.

Despite the setback in the Singles events, hope remains alive for Ghana in the team competitions. The Women’s and Men’s Teams are set to compete on Wednesday (6 March), with eyes on securing a medal and redeeming the Black Loopers’ campaign.
