West Mamprusi residents appeal for police patrol vehicles

Some residents, especially mobile money vendors and shop owners, said they are living in a state of fear and want the police hierarchy to come to their aid

Residents of West Mamprusi municipality in the North East Region have appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the government to provide them with patrol vehicles to combat the rising rate of robbery attacks in the community.

Some communities of the municipality, especially those in the Walewale township have witnessed a series of robberies in recent times. As a result of lack of patrol vehicles, the assembly members said, the police have been unable to address the issue.

Some residents, especially mobile money vendors and shop owners, said they are living in a state of fear and want the police hierarchy to come to their aid.

The assembly members described the situation as disturbing to the economic activities in the municipality.

The police in the communities – Walewale and Nasia – are ill-equipped when it comes to fighting crime.

“I think the police, even with their numbers, have done very well,” a member of the community, Pastor Ibrahim Sebiyam, told Asaase News. “The numbers are woefully inadequate. But with regards to vehicles, we still have to appeal to the central government, individuals, and organisations, to come in and support.”

“Indeed, the number of vehicles given or available right now is woefully inadequate to enable effective night and day patrols in the municipality, considering how fast the municipality is,” he added.

Meanwhile, the municipal police commander, DSP Cosmos Awe is unhappy with how some assembly members in the municipality always come to him to seek the release of some criminals.

“I am not here to mention names or point people out, but we the same people in this room, for whatever reason, our honourable assembly members will always come to the police whether to win, to canvass for potential votes.

“When the case is even of high-security challenge, they try to go in. We will not withstand that,” he said.

At least 16 national service police personnel have been posted to the municipality to help the permanent staff to maintain law and order in the festive season.
