The Middle Belt Campaign Coordinator for former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, says about 92% of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) newly elected constituency executives in the Ashanti Region are aligned with the party’s 2028 presidential candidate following last weekend’s internal elections.
The Effiduase-Asokore Member of Parliament said the outcome of the constituency executive elections underscored Dr. Bawumia’s growing influence in the NPP’s traditional stronghold as the party reorganises after its defeat in the 2024 general election.
‘Strong mandate for Bawumia’
According to Ayew Afriye candidates who openly supported Dr. Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries secured victories in most constituencies across the Ashanti Region.
He said even in contests where a preferred Bawumia candidate was defeated, the winning candidate was also regarded as a supporter of the former vice-president.
“About 92 percent of the newly elected constituency executives in the Ashanti Region are aligned with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said.
Ayew Afriye added that in several constituencies, pro-Bawumia candidates won all available executive positions, while the lowest level of support recorded for his camp was about 70%.
Minority aligned with other aspirants
The lawmaker said the remaining 8% of elected executives were individuals who had previously supported either former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong or Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong during the NPP presidential primaries.
He argued, however, that the overall results demonstrated that Dr. Bawumia retained overwhelming support among the party’s grassroots leadership in the Ashanti Region.
Ahead of 2028
The constituency elections form part of the NPP’s nationwide internal reorganisation as it seeks to rebuild after losing power in the 2024 general election.
If the figures cited by Ayew Afriye are accurate, the outcome would further strengthen Dr. Bawumia’s organisational influence in the Ashanti Region ahead of the party’s preparations for the 2028 elections.
The NPP has not released an official breakdown of constituency executives by factional alignment, and Ayew Afriye’s assessment has not been independently verified by the party.
