Eastern Region: Qnet agent shot dead in Suhum

He was allegedly gunned down by a 65-year-old man, Otu Acquah, when the now deceased and his friend allegedly entered the suspect’s compound to harvest avocados at about 11pm over the weekend

A 25-year-old man reported to be an independent representative of the dissolved e-commerce marketing company Qnet has been shot dead at Okorase, a suburb of Suhum in the Eastern Region.

Residents of Okorase have been accusing Qnet workers trafficked to the community from the Volta Region and parts of Togo for the rising frequency of pilfering and burglary.

According to the residents, many of the victims are hungry and going about begging for food and money.

The assembly member for Okorase, Godfred Abanga, expressed worry about how young men and women have been lured to the community under the guise of network marketing for Qnet and have become stranded and hungry.

He said that because of the hunger, many of the Qnet victims have engaged in social vices. Nonetheless, he said, the suspect must be prosecuted.

Dissolved

Meanwhile, concerned residents joined Qnet workers on Monday (24 April 2023) on a protest march over indiscriminate displays of guns and threats of gunfire by the suspect who lives in the community.

In February, police in Koforidua arrested roughly 60 independent representatives (IRs) and workers of Qnet. The online networking marketing company was dissolved in November last year.

The IRs and their recruits were arrested in a swoop conducted in Trom, Two-Streams, Bornya and other parts of New Juaben South where they operate surreptitiously out of rented flats.

The crackdown follows complaints by residents that the company’s operations have become a threat to security, increasing burglary and cases of pilfering.
