Ken Ashigbey: Biometric software for SIM card re-registration facing challenges

The CEO of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications says the software for the biometric re-registration of SIM cards is facing technical challenges

Ken Ashigbey, the CEO of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, has revealed that the software used by the telecommunication companies for the biometric re-registration of SIM cards has developed some challenges.

Speaking to Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe on The Big Bulletin on Thursday (6 January), Ashigbey said the National Communications Authority (NCA) employed a technical partner – KelniGVG – to develop a common platform for the biometric registration.

However, he said the app developed challenges along the line affecting the smooth flow of the exercise.

“The NCA has its technical partner, the common platform partner. KelniGVG has designed the app that’s being used for biometric registration. There have been some challenges with it in terms of the speed at which this will work and considering the volume that we have,” Ashigbey said.

“The good news is that KelniGVG is developing an update for the app. We know that there’s a new update that is coming and that’ll help resolve some of the challenges including the offline mode of working so, all of that is being done,” he said.

Hundreds of people have continued to be in long queues at the various telecommunication centres to have their SIM cards re-registered through biometric verification.

This comes after the government’s directive for all SIM cards to be re-registered within a period of six months (from October 2021 to March 2022) using the Ghana Card.
