One shot dead, four others injured as civilians clash with soldiers at Nyinahin

The police have launched investigations into the incident

One person has been confirmed dead and three others injured following an alleged shooting incident involving soldiers in Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region.

According to a police report widely shared online, the tragic event occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday (24 April) when a group of youth was escorting the remains of a deceased friend to the cemetery for burial.

The police say a military truck with registration number 73 GA 39, reportedly travelling from Kumasi towards Bibiani, intercepted the funeral procession at Nyinahin-Nkwanta. Eyewitnesses told police that six uniformed soldiers alighted from the truck and confronted one of the mourners, identified as 37-year-old Akwasi Lala, alias Kushivi, who was wearing military-style clothing.

The confrontation escalated when the soldiers demanded he remove the uniform. As he complied, one of the soldiers allegedly shot him in the head at close range, killing him instantly. The soldiers are then said to have fired indiscriminately into the crowd, injuring three other mourners.

The injured — Kofi Agyapong, 44, Alfred Kwarteng, 24, and Kofi Owusu, alias Juve, 36 — were rushed to the Nyinahin Government Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.

Following a distress call at about 11:10 a.m., the Nyinahin Police alerted checkpoints at Akota and Antwi Adjei-Njwanta to intercept the military vehicle, but it reportedly sped past without stopping.

Police officers who later visited the crime scene retrieved 18 spent bullet shells. The body of the deceased, Akwasi Lala, has since been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for autopsy.

The police have launched investigations into the incident, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the soldiers involved.
