The 2025 Africa Land Forces Summit officially opened in Ghana on Monday (7 April), bringing together military leaders from 50 nations to deliberate on pressing security issues, including cyber threats, violent extremism, and border-related concerns.
The summit, held in Accra, is one of the continent’s largest military gatherings, drawing participation from over 40 African countries along with delegations from the United States and Europe.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister for Defence, Edward Omane Boamah, who represented President John Dramani Mahama, underscored the relevance of the summit.
He noted that the rapidly evolving nature of global security threats demands greater collaboration among nations.
“This platform offers our land forces and international partners a unique opportunity to develop unified responses to modern-day security challenges,” Boamah said.
He stressed the importance of intelligence sharing, coordinated planning, and counter-intelligence as essential tools in the fight against terrorism and cybercrime.
The event began after a ceremonial change of guard at the Jubilee House and featured key dignitaries including:
- U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, who spoke on behalf of the U.S. government
- Ghana’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong
- Service chiefs from the Ghana Armed Forces
- Members of the diplomatic corps
- Military representatives from across Africa, the United States, and Europe
The summit, backed by international partners such as the United States, is expected to strengthen regional defence ties and generate practical strategies for combating transnational threats.
