Highest paid pensioner in Ghana earns GH¢51,000 per month

The Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang has hinted on the amount the highest paid pensioner in Ghana earns every month.

Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang in a meeting with Journalists disclosed that the highest pension earner in Ghana takes home about GH¢51,000 every month.

Responding to questions posed by journalists, Dr Ofori-Tenkorang indicated that the pension paid monthly is regulated by an act of Parliament, and the same Act of Parliament also determines the end-of-service earnings for contributors.

“I as Director General cannot change what is legitimately due [a pensioner] arbitrarily.”
He added that the highest earner “contributed for so long so he earned the full pension right,”

In a related develoment, “The pension payroll has been trimmed by about GH¢2.7 million per month, and this benefit accrues monthly to the Trust,”

He said pension payments had been increased by 10 percent in 2018, adding that the minimum pension was above the statutory monthly minimum wage for workers.
