COVID-19: Ghana’s death toll now 341

The latest figure also reveals the country has recorded 175 new cases of COVID-19 increasing its active cases to 1, 404

Ghana has recorded three more COVID-19 related deaths in the past few days increasing the countryā€™s death toll to 341, according to latest figures from the Ghana Health Service.

This means the country has recorded three more deaths since the last case count of 338 on 7 January.

The latest figure also reveals the country has recorded 175 new cases of COVID-19 increasing its active cases to 1, 404.

Confirmed cases on the other hand, according to the GHS, now stand at 56,981 with recoveries of 55, 236 as at 11 January.

Dr Radha Maria Hackman, member of the Ministry of Healthā€™sĀ COVID-19Ā Standard Treatment Guidelines Committee had earlier said Ghana is yet to record a new variant of COVID-19.

She was, however, quick to add that she will not be surprised if the country detects a new variant in the new cases.

Fatigued frontline workers

Meanwhile, Dr Justice Yankson, General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), is calling for a concerted effort in educating the public on the need to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols following recent surge.

According to him, the call will help reduce pressure on frontline workers and existing health facilities across the country.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Yaa Mensah onĀ The Asaase Breakfast ShowĀ on Wednesday, Dr Yankson stated that frontline workers are already exhausted having worked for close to a year in battling the pandemic.

ā€œClearly our activities during theĀ Christmas, New Year, before, during and after the election put together like one month period has contributed to what we all are experiencing now, that is why we are asking that we observe the COVID protocols to break the chain of transmission,ā€ Dr Yankson stated.

He added: ā€œIf we donā€™t do that and this second wave gets out of hand then we are going to struggle. Mind you the health professionals themselves are already fatigued, having gone through this for a whole year, they are also fatigued, a lot of them are getting infection because people are walking into the health facilities unlike previously when you will be at home and they will reach out to you.ā€

Dr Yankson wants public figures and celebrities to jump on board and to use their influence to help educate the public on the need to observeĀ COVID-19Ā safety protocols.
