Jantuah to government: Bring back “Operation Feed Yourself”

Operation Feed Yourself was an agricultural scheme designed to increase production of food crops, with the ultimate aim of making Ghana then self-sufficient in food

Kwame Jantuah, a private legal practitioner, has suggested that the government reintroduce the “Operation Feed Yourself” programme to help alleviate the plight of Ghanaians.

Operation Feed Yourself was an agricultural scheme, launched in Ghana in 1972 under the military general and then head of state, Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.

The national programme sought to increase production of food crops, with the aim of making Ghana self-sufficient in food.

“I think one of the things we have not done successfully is to conscientise our population to start having backyard gardens, if for nothing at all,” Jantuah said on Asaase Radio’s current affairs and news analysis show The Forum on Saturday (18 June 2022).

“Do you know the impact of Operation Feed Yourself in this country? It depends on the approach . . . this is a critical time,” he told the sit-in host of The Forum, Benjamin Offei-Addo.

“The way we are pushing planting of trees, this is a serious situation, where I think if people get into planting their own food in their backyard, this will help.

“So, make space. Take some of those pavement blocks off, create a certain space and start growing,” he urged.

Speaking on the same programme, a general secretary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Charles Bissue, said the government has plans to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians following the global economic crisis.

“Market pricing is high. I am a Ghanaian; we are all in this together. The turbulence in the economy is clear but the government has a short-, medium- and long-term plan to alleviate it.

“Even the best things that this government implements will continue to be criticised by the [opposition] NDC and this is a fact.

“The government accepts that there is turbulence, but is the government doing something about it? Yes! The E-Levy and the cuts in financing of the ministries are geared towards this,” Bissue said.
