Bagbin dispatch rider dies in motor crash

The dispatch rider was part of an advance party for the Speaker of Parliament and was heading for Wa. Two other people sustained injuries

An advance security detail for Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been involved in a motor crash, leading to the death of a dispatch rider on the spot.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday (6 August 2021) at Juaso, in the Ashanti Region, setting off heavy gridlock on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The yet-to-be identified dispatch rider crashed to the ground on his motorbike after a vehicle crossed him, an eyewitness said.

His motorbike collided head-on with a Nissan Sentra vehicle which was moving at top speed as its driver attempted to overtake an articulated lorry.

“I was trying to make way for the convoy,” said the driver of the articulated lorry, Mustapha Azure. “Suddenly I saw this car at top speed trying to overtake me.

“He suddenly collided head-on with the rider. He was dragged underneath my truck, which eventually burst into flames,” Azure said.

Two other people sustained injuries and are being treated at the Juaso Government Hospital, medical officials have confirmed to Asaase News.
