Odartey Lamptey: I was disappointed Ghana failed to beat Nigeria

Nii Odartey Lamptey

Former Ghana international, Nii Odartey Lamptey has said he was disappointed the Black Stars were unable to beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria last Friday.

Odartey Lamptey said he takes solace in the fact that there is a return match in Nigeria and was hopeful Ghana will win.

Speaking with Kent Mensah on Sunday Night on Asaase Radio, he said: “I was impressed but not winning against Nigeria, I was a bit disappointed. If we were going to play about four matches to be able to qualify that would have been fine but not this…I think that we should have done everything to beat them [Nigerians] here.”

He added: “We were not creative enough at the opponent’s half. We had a good midfield but we were not aggressive up front. We didn’t punish the Nigerian keeper enough.”

On the return match, Odartey said “We have to be a bit cautious when we go to Nigeria. if we go all-out we’ll be punished…”

Ghana held Nigeria to a goalless draw in the first leg of the 2022 Fifa World Cup final qualifying fixture on Friday (25 March) at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

As expected in a fully-packed stadium, the Black Stars made an aggressive start to the encounter but the Super Eagles were solid to resist the hosts’ attacking threats.

The draw leaves Nigeria and Ghana with all to play for the return fixture that is billed for the Moshood Abiola Stadium on 29 March.

The Super Eagles are aiming to make their seventh World Cup appearance in Qatar while Ghana have only featured in three editions of the tournament (2006, 2010, 2014).
