Obuasi mine charts new path under Sam Pobee’s ‘MOGA’ vision
Pobee’s plan revolves around four core pillars: Production, People, Sustainability, and Safety. He is pushing for higher output through the adoption of emerging technologies, greater employee motivation, and stronger ties with local communities

AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine is laying the foundation for a full revival under the leadership of newly appointed Managing Director, Sam Boakye Pobee.
His ambitious blueprint, dubbed Making Obuasi Great Again (MOGA) — aims to restore the mine’s prominence in Ghana’s mining sector and the global gold industry.
Pobee’s plan revolves around four core pillars: Production, People, Sustainability, and Safety. He is pushing for higher output through the adoption of emerging technologies, greater employee motivation, and stronger ties with local communities.
“We want to set the pace. We want to be the industry benchmark for occupational health and safety in Ghana,” Pobee declared during a town hall meeting with community leaders.
The Obuasi Mine, once hailed as a crown jewel in AngloGold’s global portfolio, has had a troubled past—temporarily shutting down in 2014 and facing repeated challenges from illegal mining.
Its revival began in 2019, and with Pobee’s arrival in 2024, many in the industry believe Obuasi is on track to reclaim its legacy.
Pobee also stressed the importance of making Obuasi the “employer of choice” while ensuring the mine operates with transparency, discipline, and environmental responsibility.
A new 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan is being rolled out to deliver lasting community impact and sustainable growth.
With the MOGA vision as its compass, Obuasi Mine is once again being positioned as a symbol of hope, innovation, and prosperity in Ghana’s mining future.
