Former Deputy Executive Director of Ghana’s National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware Mensah, has been released from custody after meeting a court-imposed bail condition of 10 million cedis ($665,000), a senior official of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) said on Wednesday.
Deputy NPP General Secretary Haruna Mohammed told Channel One TV that Oware Mensah secured her release on Tuesday, while her former boss, ex-NSA Executive Director Osei Assibey Antwi, remained in custody after failing to meet an 800-million-cedi bail requirement.
“Madam Gifty Oware met the bail condition yesterday and has been released, but her boss is still in custody. Eight hundred million—what kind of bail condition is that?” Haruna said.
Oware Mensah has pleaded not guilty to five charges, including willfully causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering, and using public office for profit. Prosecutors allege that she created nearly 10,000 ghost names on the National Service payroll, leading to losses of more than 38 million cedis.
She was first charged before the Accra High Court on 22 October.
