NPP’s National Council meets over Bawumia’s choice of running mate

National organiser of the NPP Henry Nana Boakye had earlier revealed that Bawumia settled on Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is meeting today over the selection of a running mate for its Flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia.

National organiser of the NPP Henry Nana Boakye had earlier revealed that Bawumia settled on Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Today’s meeting is in line with Article 13 of the NPP Constitution which states that whoever is selected by a flagbearer as running mate must be done in consultation with the National Executive Council.

By convention, the NPP presents a balanced ticket that has one each of the two candidates (presidential and vice-presidential) hailing either from any of the five Northern regions or from the southern part of Ghana (mostly from the Akan-speaking Ashanti and Eastern Regions).

With the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, hailing from the North East Region, any of the three NPP front-runners for the vice-presidency, if selected, would help the party to maintain the Christian/Muslim, North/South and Akan/non-Akan traditions with which the party has come to be identified over the past 32 years.
