NPP’s Jirapa struggles predate Bawumia, says Dr Ekua Amoakoh

A Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has mounted a strong defence of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects in the Jirapa Constituency, rejecting claims that the party lacks grassroots support in the area and vowing renewed efforts to overturn its long-standing electoral losses there.

Dr Amoakoh’s comments made on Facebook on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, were in response to remarks by Kwasi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for the campaign of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who cited the 2024 presidential election results in Jirapa—hometown of Ghana’s independence-era politician Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia’s ally, S.D. Dombo—to argue that Dr. Bawumia does not enjoy the backing of Dombo’s ancestral family or the constituency at large.

Addressing the criticism, Dr Amoakoh acknowledged the NPP’s historical struggles in Jirapa, noting that the party has never won the parliamentary seat since the Fourth Republic began in 1992. However, she stressed that this reality predates Dr Bawumia’s leadership ambitions and should not be laid at his doorstep.

“The fact that the NPP has not won Jirapa since 1992 is a blot on the conscience of the party as a whole, not a problem that started with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. We will put in the necessary work to improve our numbers there and ultimately win the seat,” she stated

Dr Amoakoh insisted that the NPP’s renewed focus on Jirapa would be grounded in hard work, engagement, and respect for local dynamics, rather than internal disparagement. She criticised attempts by Ken’s camp to frame the contest in divisive terms, since that could alienate voters.

In a pointed rebuttal to suggestions that Dr Bawumia lacks support from the Dombo tradition, the Deputy Spokesperson maintained that endorsements backing the former Vice-President come from members of the Dombo family and respected stalwarts who identify with the Dombo political heritage.

She argued that such support undermines claims that Jirapa has decisively rejected Dr. Bawumia or his political lineage.
