The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has accused the government and state security agencies of using intimidation and harassment to silence political opponents, particularly young members of the party.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (24 September), Mustapha said dozens of NPP members have been arrested in recent months, a situation he warned could undermine Ghana’s democracy if unchecked.
“We will let the government know that we are not cowards. You cannot intimidate the NPP. We are bold, courageous, and we will not stop criticizing the government,” he declared.
Mustapha insisted that while political rhetoric can sometimes be unsavoury, it does not justify what he described as the “Rambo-style” arrests and abuse of power by security agencies. He cited the recent arrest of party member Jamal Aboye, calling the manner in which it was carried out “absolutely senseless.”
The NPP youth wing has petitioned the Office of the President and the Inspector-General of Police to stop what they say is a campaign of harassment. Mustapha warned that if the trend continues, the party will escalate its protests, including demonstrations, picketing and vigils across the country.
