NPP to supporters: Be calm, respect Akufo-Addo’s MMDCE nominees

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been advised to respect the president’s decisions when the list of MMDCEs is released

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on its rank and file to remain calm and respect the list of nominees by the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to serve as metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs).

The much-expected list will be made public very soon, government officials says.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday (17 September 2021), the communications director of the NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, accepted that not everyone will have his or her preferred candidate nominated, but asked party members to welcome the president’s decisions.

“We urge everybody to be calm and to act in ways that promote good relations at a working level in order to give the nominees the best possible opportunity to work in the interest of the grass roots of the nation,” he said.

The selection process, according to the NPP’s communications director, reflects the president’s vision for “our local governance system and the country at large”.

“Now that the selection process is over, we urge all former contestants and stakeholders to adopt the nominees as their own, encourage smooth confirmation processes, and support approved MMDCEs to deliver the best to their areas,” he said. “Once the list is published, competition in any form ought to end.”

The party also advised the nominees to be as open as possible and provide space for divergent opinions.

On the NPP’s registration of party members, Buaban Asamoa expressed concern about reports that some officers are preventing certain members from registering, in the belief that the register will be used for internal elections.

“Party officer election registers shall be compiled differently and will be done later per guidelines to be issued … So, we are assuring all our polling station executives to open up, work hard and try to capture as many persons who are likely to vote NPP as possible,” Buaben Asamoa said.

“The names should also go into the books that have been provided. Names in any other book not provided by the party for this exercise will not be valid or properly captured,” he said.
