The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says that it will march to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Monday (13 July) to demand answers over the arrest of the leading party spokesman Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
The NPP national organiser, Henry Nana Boakye (“Nana B”), announced the protest on Sunday, saying the party wants clarity on the circumstances of Aboagye’s detention, which he described as an attempt to intimidate opposition figures.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One News, Boakye alleged that Aboagye was arrested without prior invitation or notice from EOCO regarding any investigation.
“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” Boakye said.
The NPP says it supports accountability but insists that due process be followed.
The allegations follow a Facebook post by the NPP general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.
Frimpong said Aboagye was arrested by EOCO officers with the assistance of immigration officials at Accra International Airport.
According to the post, the party’s lawyers have been denied access to Miracles, his whereabouts remain unknown and no charges have been filed.
Boakye also accused state institutions of being used to harass political opponents, saying such actions undermine Ghana’s democratic principles.
At the time of publication, EOCO had not commented publicly on the arrest or responded to the NPP’s allegations.
