NPP to challenge EC’s decision on Ablekuma North rerun in court

Calling the EC’s directive “whimsical” and “capricious,” the NPP says it is confident its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the 7 December poll and will be declared victorious once full collation resumes

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will go to court to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.

At a press conference in Accra on 3 July, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua questioned the EC’s sudden change from three polling stations—previously identified as pending, to 19 and accused the Commission of bowing to pressure from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“It’s clear the Commissioners are pandering to political threats and are trying to protect their jobs,” Mr Kodua said, referencing recent statements by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and the EC’s own submissions to Parliament.

The party insists that only a court can lawfully authorise a rerun of already held elections and warned that the EC’s decision, if unchecked, could invite chaos in future polls.

The NPP alleges the NDC withheld pink sheets from polling stations they lost and was involved in the destruction of election materials during collation, claims it says are supported by video evidence.

Calling the EC’s directive “whimsical” and “capricious,” the NPP says it is confident its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the 7 December poll and will be declared victorious once full collation resumes.

The EC, however, maintains that the rerun, set for 11 July, is necessary due to the absence of verified results from 19 disputed polling stations following vandalism during the collation process.
