NPP sets up nine-member committee to review constitution after election defeat

The decision follows the submission of a post-election review report by a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has established a nine-member committee to review its constitution, as part of efforts to rebuild and reposition the party after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The decision follows the submission of a post-election review report by a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye. The Oquaye Committee was mandated to investigate the causes of the party’s loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and recommend reforms.

The emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held on Wednesday (16 April) at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, was attended by top party leaders, including former President Nana Akufo-Addo and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the newly formed constitutional review committee will focus on addressing weaknesses identified in the Oquaye report.

“The National Council accepted the report, but there are several steps we need to take. There will be a need for a constitutional amendment,” Mr. Frimpong said. “So, based on that, the National Council has constituted a nine-member committee to look at the report and propose necessary amendments.”

He noted that the party is yet to fully analyse the contents of the report, adding that the findings would be shared with the grassroots and the public in due course.

“We want the media and Ghanaians to know that we have just received the report today, April 16. We’re yet to go into details. In the coming days, we will communicate to our people,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong also urged party members to avoid speculating about the report’s content, warning that premature commentary could mislead the public and create internal confusion.

As part of its rebuilding efforts, the NPP leadership plans to embark on a nationwide tour to engage with party supporters and outline the way forward based on the committee’s recommendations.

The Oquaye Committee’s report follows a challenging election year for the NPP, which not only lost the presidency but also saw a dramatic reduction in parliamentary seats, losing its majority in Parliament.
