NPP presidential race: I don’t have a favourite candidate, says Akufo-Addo

The president says whoever emerges as the flagbearer of the party for the 2024 elections has his full backing

Story Highlights
  • "The decision has to be the decision of the party, my thing is that whoever the party elects as the flagbearer for 2024, that person is who I will support."

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has clarified that he has no favourite candidate in the lead up to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential election.

Speaking in a radio interview as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region, Akufo-Addo said he would back whoever emerges as the flagbearer of the party for the 2024 elections.

“My duty is to hold the balance, to make sure that there is a level playing field for all inside our party. The decision has to be the decision of the party, my thing is that whoever the party elects as the flagbearer for 2024, that person is who I will support and God willing if I have strength I will campaign for the person to become President,” Nana Addo told Kumasi-based Pure FM.

Possible contenders

Akufo-Addo during an introduction of his ministers at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi over the weekend, told the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II that both Alan Kyerematen and Dr Afriyie Akoto are eyeing his seat.

“Asantehene, allow me to introduce my team members. Here is your grandson, Dr Afriyie Akoto, my Agriculture Minister who wants to become the President. Nana, this is Alan Kyeremanten, he has been vying for my seat for a very long time, a very workaholic minister,” he added.

Others who have been mentioned are frontrunner Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice-president, Ken Agyapong, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, Joe Ghartery, the former railway minister.
