NPP polls chaos: Party executives are asleep, says Baah

Dr Richard Amoako Baah says the internal issues may affect the NPP in the upcoming 2024 general elections

Story Highlights
  • Freddie Blay, the national chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said he is not surprised that the party’s internal poll to elect polling station executives across the country is going through a few challenges.
  • Speaking to Beatrice Adu on the Big Bulletin on Tuesday (February 22), Dr Baah said the internal issues may affect the party in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Dr Richard Amoako Baah, a political scientist has accused the party executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sleeping on the job.

He mentioned that the numerous challenges encountered at the ongoing internal polls to elect polling station executives across the country are indicative of the fact that the party is not ready for the 2024 general elections.

Dr Baah said the internal issues may affect the party in the 2024 general polls.

“It looks as if the [New Patriotic Party] party executives have fallen asleep. They don’t have any means of engagement, nothing. By now they should have met all the aspiring candidates, talk to them, lay down some ground rules, rules of engagements even though there’s a constitution there, this is very much needed. But the way it is now, it looks as though events overtake them before they react, that is not good,” Baah said in conversation with Beatrice Adu on The Big Bulletin.

NPP not ready for 2024 elections

“As we speak now, I can’t say they [NPP] are ready [for 2024 general elections]. No, events always overtake them. Very much so, yes [this can cause them the 2024 general elections] but it is a bit too early to tell. The party is not doing well. Look around you, this E-Levy is the time we have. If it falls through, we’re in big trouble. The government has put all its eggs in one basket, E-Levy, is not appropriate”, he stated.

I’m not surprised

Freddie Blay, the national chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said he is not surprised that the party’s internal poll to elect polling station executives across the country is going through a few challenges.

He stated that although some of the challenges were envisaged, he did not expect internal issues at the local level to “degenerate into fisticuffs”.

However, he indicated that measures and laid down procedures have been instituted to deal with the electoral issues.

Speaking to Beatrice Adu on the Big Bulletin on Monday (21 February), Blay said: “Not at all [didn’t come to me as a surprise]. Really, I was not expecting it [challenges] that it’ll be huge and indeed, it has not been huge. Except that only in isolated places where these things have happened.”

He added: “…When you have an election people disagree and I don’t expect that it will degenerate into some fisticuffs and so forth. But, if it even does, we’ll contain it. We’ll make sure that this thing will not degenerate into something else. So, I’m not surprised at all.”
