NPP Internal Polls: 32% incumbents retained, 68% kicked out in constituency elections

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its recently held constituency level elections, saw about 68% of incumbent constituency officers losing to new aspirants. 32% however, retained their positions after the elections.

Over all, a total of 2,517 constituency executives where elected in all 16 regions of the country.

Out of this, 803 elected officers (which represents 32%) where existing executives who were retained and 1,731 (representing 68%) constitute new entrants in the constituency politics of the NPP.

Party big wigs in the NPP who are familiar with the statistical outcome of the constituency elections, have told Asaase News that, the results of the constituency level executive elections did not come as a surprise to them.

They also indicated that the regional executive elections coming on from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 May 2022, is likely to record a similar outcome as the constituency elections, where a lot more incumbent office holders at the regional level, will lose their positions to new aspirants.

Retention percentages

With the exception of the North East Region which recorded a 52% retention rate of incumbent executives, Eastern Region of 46% and Bono East of 45%, all the remaining 13 Regions recorded below 40% retention rate of incumbent executives.

Greater Accra recorded 34%, Upper East and Upper West, recorded 26% and 24% respectively. The Western Region 37%, Western North 24%, and the Northern Region and Savannah Regions both recorded 26% retention of existing constituency office holders.

Bono Region saw 24% retention, Ahafo 28%, Central 21%, Volta 24%, Oti 26% and the Ashanti Region which is the stronghold of the NPP recorded 36% retention rate of incumbent constituency executives.

Upcoming regional elections

In the upcoming regional level elections of the NPP, nine out of the 16 regions are expected to hold their polls on Friday 27 May 2022.

They are the Savannah Region, Northern Region, Ashanti Region, Bono East Region, Upper East Region, Central Region, North East Region, Ahafo Region and the Western North Region.

Six others, the Eastern Region, Western Region, Greater Accra Region, Volta Region, Oti Region and the Upper West Region, will hold their elections on Saturday 28 May 2022.

The Bono Region will conduct their elections on Sunday 29 May 2022.
