NPP flagbearer race: Wontumi backs Bawumia as leading 2028 contender

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has urged party delegates to base their choice of flagbearer on a candidate’s ability to win the 2028 general election, rather than personal relationships or family ties.

Speaking during former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency on Saturday, Wontumi said Dr. Bawumia is best positioned to lead the party to victory.

“If it is power that we want, then it shouldn’t be about the relationships we have with people, but about the person who can help us win the 2028 election,” he said.

The NPP is expected to hold its primaries in two weeks to select a flagbearer who will lead the party into the 2028 elections.

Wontumi stressed that delegates should prioritise a candidate’s electability over loyalty or personal connections, framing the upcoming vote as a strategic decision for the party’s future.
