NPP flagbearer race: I will run a clean campaign, says Joe Ghartey

The MP for Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region said his campaign for the presidential slot of the NPP will be devoid of foul language

Former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey has given assurance to the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he will run a clean campaign ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, which he intends to contest.

The MP for Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy call on former president John Kufuor at his Aburi residence, to formally inform him of his intention to contest for the presidential slot of the NPP.

Announcing the visit on his Facebook wall, the former Attorney General in the erstwhile Kufuor administration wrote: “Yesterday, January 12, 2023, I climbed the Aburi mountains for a “pilgrimage” to the residence of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“I had a thoroughly enjoyable time in his company. I seized the opportunity to thank him for appointing me Attorney – General and Minister of Justice in 2006”.

“I reminded him of several incidents during my tenure, and this brought a smile to his face and a twinkle in his eyes. I said to him that during the time, I never felt under any pressure from him to take any decision one way or another,” Ghartey added.

According to him, Kufuor said that he was happy with his performance and his professionalism when he served under him and reminded those present that before “I became Attorney – General, I was his mother, Obapanyin Ama Dapaah’s lawyer first and subsequently his elder sister, Nana Durwaa’s lawyer.”

The learned lawyer wrote that concerning his intention to contest the upcoming NPP presidential primaries, Kufuor expressed delight that he had come to inform him.

“He cautioned, however, that in the upcoming contest all the candidates should show sportsmanship, and at the end whoever emerged should be supported by all.

“President Kufuor said he was still confident that the NPP was a better option when it came to governance of Ghana. He hoped that we would work hard and win the next election. He reminded me that the Party, NPP, belongs to all of us, and no one is bigger than the Party, and that is important at all times to protect the integrity of the Party,” Ghartey recalled.

“He stated that he had noticed a burning ambition in me to offer myself for service to the people over the years, which is good. He reminded those present that where I came from, the Western Region, was very much part of the independence and post independence struggle in Ghana. He emphasised the role of the railway workers and the famous “bottom tree”, which was where the railway workers met to make decisions,” he posted on his Facebook wall.

In response to the caution of Kufuor, Ghartey wrote: “On my part, I promised President Kufuor that I would not do anything to bring the party into disrepute.”

“I assured him further that I would ran a clean campaign and not disparage any of the other contestants, since as he said and I also agreed, that we must campaign in such a way that will allow us to come together after the contest and pursue a common goal,” he added.
