NPA dismisses fears of fuel shortage, cites over five weeks of diesel reserves

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has assured Ghanaians that there is no imminent threat of fuel shortages, despite rising tensions in the Middle East.

The reassurance comes as concerns mount globally over possible disruptions to energy supply chains.

Speaking on JoyNews on Sunday, 1 March, the Director of Economic Regulation and Planning at the NPA, Abass Ibrahim Tasunti, disclosed that Ghana’s petroleum reserves remain robust.

“As of last Friday, we have diesel stocks to last us over five weeks—roughly up to 5.3 weeks. For petrol, we have almost 6.8 weeks to last,” Tasunti said.

He clarified that the current stock levels are not a reactionary measure triggered by the Middle East crisis. Rather, they reflect the Authority’s routine planning framework to ensure nationwide supply stability.

“Even without this war, we always ensure that we have a plan to make petroleum products available for consumers. This is not something being done because of the war; it is something we do regularly. It is one of NPA’s major mandates,” he stated.

According to Tasunti, the Authority maintains close oversight of the daily discharge of imported petroleum products, while local production continues to supplement national supply.

The NPA’s assurance comes at a time when global oil markets remain sensitive to geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
