“Not about numbers” – NPP explains withdrawal from Tamale Central contest

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not contest the anticipated Tamale Central by-election following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in last week’s military helicopter crash.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (12 August), the party’s Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, said the decision was taken by the National Steering Committee after considering the national mood.

“The whole of Ghana is in a mourning state… having lost senior members of government in the line of duty in this manner, we must come together to give our departed brothers the fitting burial they deserve,” Nimako said.

He emphasised that the choice was not about political calculations but about showing solidarity with the families affected.

“It is not always about numbers; it is about making sure Ghana’s democracy thrives. We’d rather share in grief than engage in contestation at this time,” he added.

Nimako dismissed suggestions that the move was a political strategy to avoid defeat, insisting that “no two elections are the same” and that the party has won unexpected seats before.

He also clarified that the NPP has not placed any conditions on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reciprocate by withdrawing from other upcoming by-elections, such as Akwatia.

“This is a bold political decision that should be commended by all well-meaning Ghanaians,” Nimako stressed.
