North East Region to get best roads in Ghana, says President Mahama

The President assured that his government, under the Big Push programme, will ensure the region gets the best road connectivity within his four-year term

The President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has pledged that the North East Region of Ghana will receive some of the best roads in the country, improving economic activities across the six district assemblies in the region.

During his visit to the North East Region on Friday, 13 June 2025, at Nalerigu, the regional capital, President Mahama stated that the region has suffered from poor road network connectivity for years.

He assured that his government, under the Big Push programme, will ensure the region gets the best road connectivity within his four-year term.

“Ladies and gentlemen, development is movement and connectivity, and roads are the veins that carry economic life across our country. In the North East Region, despite its strategic location and agricultural potential, it has long suffered from poor road network connectivity. This is going to be a thing of the past. By the time I leave office in four years, the North East Region will have some of the best roads in the country,” Mahama pledged.

The President reiterated that his government has prioritised infrastructure development in the 2025 budget, addressing the historical injustice faced by the North East Region in terms of road networks.

“Guided by this, my government in the 2025 budget has made infrastructure development a priority, and we are committed to addressing the injustice the North East has faced,” he added.

President Mahama highlighted that one of his government’s first priorities is the completion of the Mishio-Wuyima bridge in the West Mamprusi Municipality, which has been included in the Big Push programme.

“We have devoted GHC20 billion for infrastructure development under the Big Push. The Finance Minister has assured that all contractors executing projects under the Big Push will be paid within two weeks of presenting certificates for payment, ensuring that projects won’t stall,” he explained.

Other road projects to be constructed within the four-year term include the Chereponi-Gbintri-Nakpanduri road (part of the Eastern Corridor road network), the Nalerigu-Bunkpurugu road, the Wulugu-Yagaba road, the Chereponi-Wapuli-Yendi road and the Nalerigu town roads.

President Mahama also addressed the stalled Savelugu-Walewale road project, which was awarded to a contractor by the previous government. He assured that the contract would be repackaged under the Big Push programme for rehabilitation.

“A contract was awarded for the reconstruction of the Savelugu-Walewale road. Unfortunately, that contract has stalled, and GHC30 million was paid to the contractor who has since vacated the site. We are repackaging the road from Savelugu to Walewale and also putting it under the Bog Push for rehabilitation,” he assured.

The President’s visit to the North East Region was part of his “Thank You Tour” to express gratitude to the people for their support in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
