The National Health Insurance Authority has held its annual performance review for the year 2023 with a call to get more new members into the scheme in 2024 and beyond.
The annual performance review meetings are key events on the calendar of the NHIA, where staff of the scheme from the various district offices in the region are brought together to review the performance and activities of the immediate year.
The North East regional acting director of the scheme, George Apetigah speaking during the meeting in Gambaga said, “at the beginning of 2023, the region was allocated a target of 413,456 and at the end of December 2023, we achieved an active membership of 382,054 representing 92.4% of our annual target as a region.”
He added, “Even though we were not able to achieve our targets as a region, one district office (East Mamprusi District Office) [despite] the challenges was able to achieve their targets in membership.”
The scheme says it is not leaving anyone behind and that it wants to achieve its target, thus, getting all eligible members enrolled into the scheme by the year 2030.
In terms of regional population coverage, out of a total projected population of 701793, the region achieved 382,062 in 2023 representing 54.4% of the regional population.
However, in the course of the meeting, the district officers raised some concerns regarding the deteriorating nature of some district offices in the region but the director in charge of the Northern Belt, Titus Sorey in his closing remarks tasked the district officers to solicit support from the MPs in their constituencies, indicating that the NHIS has a portion of money for the MPs to support the scheme in their various constituencies.
The North East Region with five district offices currently has a total staff strength of 71 both at the district level and the regional level. However, the Mamprugu Moaduri District Office is yet to be fully operationalised.
