North East Region: Floods destroy Walewale-Nalerigu main road and bridge

The downpour lasted about five hours and carried away valuable items belonging to residents around Nalerigu, including animals, crops, sea sand, containers and building materials

Floods have destroyed major roads and a bridge in the North-East Region after a downpour on Wednesday (9 August 2023) which made the thoroughfare between Walewale and Nalerigu inaccessible to commuters.

A dam in Tinguri-Gbani in the West Mamprusi Municipality burst during the rain, leading to the collapse of the important bridge and leaving travellers stranded on both sides of the road.

The downpour has rendered people homeless in Gaagbini, where many houses have been submerged in the water and have collapsed.

The Nalerigu, Kuruguduri and Walewale townships, Katabanawa, Tinkaya, Dinmia, Mimima and Takorayiri have all been affected by the floodwaters unleashed by the non-stop downpour.

The flood also destroyed the bridge at Tinguri-Gbani, which linked the regional capital, Nalerigu to adjoining communities.
