Ali Zakaria, the coordinator for Alan Kyerematen in the North East Region, has allegedly been assaulted by unknown delegates in the special electoral college of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Zakaria was seen bleeding profusely from a cut above his right eye after he was beaten at the Nalerigu Senior High School where voting was taking place.
He is receiving medical attention at the hospital, according to eyewitnesses.
According to eyewitnesses, Zakaria was attacked by unidentified individuals after he questioned certain voters who were displaying their ballot papers publicly to other delegates.
The NPP is holding the first round of primary elections to choose its presidential candidate for the 2024 election.
Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, a former central bank official, has been touted as an early front-runner by analysts and pollsters, though Saturday’s vote is the first of two primary races.
Party delegates will choose five of the ten top candidates on Saturday to go through a final vote on 4 November to select the flagbearer for the December 2024 presidential contest.
In the race are Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former trade and industry minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the six-term MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, the former minister of agriculture Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Joe Ghartey, the MP for Essikado/Ketan and former railway development minister.
The other candidates are former the MP for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh, the energy expert Kwadwo Poku, a former minister in the Kufuor government, Kofi Konadu Apraku, the former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and the former energy minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko.
